About Our N. Shepherd Location

A Houston Legacy Since 1946

The N. Shepherd location is a historic part of Houston’s automotive story. Established in 1946 by Adolf and Lillie, the garage was built by hand using self-poured cement blocks and pine trees from the property. In 1985, their son Eugene and his wife, Virginia, carried on the family tradition, expanding the shop with additional bays and a dynamometer for state inspections. The shop's legacy of quality and community engagement grew stronger under Sybren and Kathryn van der Pol, who introduced modern updates while preserving the garage’s historic charm. From restoring the iconic neon sign to hosting events like the “Oldie but Goodie” classic car show, the van der Pols kept the shop deeply rooted in the Garden Oaks neighborhood.

In its newest chapter, Clutch Automotive is proud to carry forward this legacy. With a commitment to excellence and strong ties to the community, the N. Shepherd shop serves the Garden Oaks neighborhood and surrounding areas, including Shepherd Park Plaza, Shepherd Park Terrace, The Heights, Oak Forest, and Candlelight Plaza. Clutch Automotive’s dedication to continuing the shop’s history ensures that the values of trust, quality, and service remain at the forefront.

Meet the Manager

Austin Stephenson has been with Clutch Automotive since nearly the beginning, bringing a passion for people and vehicles that perfectly aligns with the shop’s values. His journey to Clutch was unconventional, beginning with a podcast interview where he discussed his love for cars, leading the team to recruit him. Austin’s favorite part of his role is educating customers about their vehicles, ensuring they feel confident and informed about the services provided.

Born and raised in Houston, Austin grew up in Jersey Village before moving to Cypress during high school. He’s married to his wife, Natalie, who he calls his biggest encouragement, and together they share a love for their community and faith. Known for his warm personality and dedication to his team, Austin strives to make every visit to Clutch Automotive a personal and positive experience. In his downtime, he enjoys indulging in Houston’s diverse food scene, including favorites like Izakaya-Wa for sushi and Molina’s Cantina for Tex-Mex.
